The neck or, as it is called medically, the cervical spine is composed of vertebrae which begin in the upper torso and end at the base of the skull. The bony vertebrae are supported by ligaments which provide stability to the cervical spine. The muscles allow for support and motion and in between each vertebra are spongy discs that act as cushioning pads to absorb pressure and allow movement of the neck. The neck itself has a significant amount of latitude and supports the weight of the head. Because the neck is so flexible and because it supports the head, it is easily injured by trauma.
The lower back, known medically as the lumbar spine, is a structure that connects your upper body to your lower body. This important part of your spine provides you both with mobility and strength throughout every type of movement. The mobility of the lower spine allows movement such as turning, twisting, bending and the like; the strength of the lower spine allows you to walk, stand and lift. Injury to the lower back can restrict your activity, reduce your work capacity and damage the quality of your life. Again, this portion of the spinal column is held in alignment by ligaments, cartilage and muscle that surround and protect the spinal cord. In between each vertebra are mushy discs which act as cushioning pads that absorb pressure and promote spine movement.
The most common injuries to the neck and low back are damage to the soft tissues which are the muscles and ligaments which support both the neck and low back. Injury occurs when the muscles of the back and neck become overworked or stretched suddenly. Force or movement of the muscles surrounding the vertebrae of the neck and back can injure the ligaments and muscles which become stiff or weak. These types of injuries are often called by lay people "whiplash injuries."
If you are an injured person who has treated conservatively for a reasonable period of time without a total resolution of your symptoms, you may require further evaluation by a specialist. Special care should be given in instances where the injury causes pain in the neck or back and that pain radiates down your arms and legs. Numbness or weakness in the arms or legs should be brought to the attention of your physician so that it will assist him in diagnosis to rule out any further damage to a person's numerous spinal discs.
If any of your numerous discs, both in the neck area, mid back area and low back area are herniated or bulging, then you may require additional treatment including surgery. The bulging or herniated disc may cause impingement upon the various nerves protruding out of the vertebra thereby causing greater pain and debilitation. Obviously those kinds of injuries are much more significant than the injury to the ligaments and muscles of your spinal column.
